Like all difficult public policy debates, the issue of elderly drivers is a complicated set of competing interests.
On the one hand, society has a deep interest in allowing seniors to drive for as long as they are able to. In all but the largest cities, public transit is poorly designed to get senior citizens where they need to go. Losing a licence may force a move to an institution or a host of other significant changes for seniors and their families. It can be a significant mental blow, and even lead to a deterioration in physical health.
